The Queen’s Baton, carrying a message from Her Majesty The Queen to be read out at the Opening Ceremony, arrived into Kuala Lumpur on elephant-back.
Shirley McIntosh took her tally of Commonwealth Games medals to four at Kuala Lumpur 1998 with bronze in both events. In doing so she became Scotland’s most successful female athlete in history and was selected to carry the flag at the Closing Ceremony.
Boxer, Alex Arthur’s victory in the Featherweight division made Kuala Lumpur 1998 the third Games in a row in which Scotland had taken a Boxing gold.

No Medallists: 16 team members won a total of 12 medals across seven sports. There were four gold medallists – Alex Arthur, Margaret Letham, Joyce Lindores and Peter Nicol.
Top Male: Squash player Peter Nicol took a magnificent gold in the Men’s Singles and followed up with a bronze, alongside Stuart Cowie in the Men’s Doubles.
Top Female: On the greens of the National Lawn Bowls Centre at the Bukit Kira Sports Complex, Margaret Letham and Joyce Lindores overcame the tricky conditions in the Women’s Pairs to bring home gold, Scotland’s only Bowls medal of these Games.
Top Sport: Boxing was Scotland’s top sport with three medals – one gold and two bronze.
Repeat Medallists: Three athletes were repeat medallists – Shirley McIntosh, Robert Law and David Rattray.
