As a result of the outstanding welcome given by the Scottish people, the Edinburgh 1970 Games were the first to be known as the ‘Friendly Games’, a tag that has been carried by the Commonwealth Games ever since.
With one gold, three silver and one bronze medal, Fencing was Scotland’s second most successful sport at the 1970 Games behind Athletics. This was the last time the sport was featured on the Commonwealth Games programme.

No Medals: Team Scotland won 25 medals – 6 gold, 8 silver and 11 bronze.
No Medallists: 32 team members won a total of 25 medals across eight sports. There were six gold medallists – Ian Stewart, Lachie Stewart, Rosemary Stirling, Rosemary Payne, Thomas Imrie and Alexander Leckie.
Top Male: Fencer Alexander (Sandy) Leckie was Scotland’s top athlete of the Games with gold in the Individual Sabre competition as well as a silver medal alongside Gordon Wiles and Alexander Mitchell in the Sabre Team event. With these two medals bringing his overall Commonwealth Games tally to four, after gold in the Individual Foil in 1962 and silver in the Sabre in 1966, Alexander is Scotland’s most successful fencer in Commonwealth Games history.
Top Female: With one gold each, Scotland had two athletes claiming the title of most successful female athlete of the 1970 Games – both called Rosemary. Rosemary Stirling triumphed in a dip for the line in the 800m while Rosemary Payne had a more comfortable victory in the Discus, winning by over three metres.
Top Sport: Athletics was Scotland’s top sport with 4 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals.
Repeat Medallists: Four athletes were repeat medallists – James Alder, Thomas Imrie, Alexander Leckie and George Sandor.
