Gold medallist at the Samoa 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games, John went on to win European Youth silver the same year. He made his senior Commonwealth Games debut at Gold Coast 2018, winning bronze in the Middleweight division.
British junior champion in 2012 and 2013, John made a successful switch to the senior ranks with gold at both the Scottish Elite Championships and GB Three Nations Championships in 2017.
