Nicolae made his Commonwealth Games debut for Team Scotland at Birmingham 20222, competing in the 74kg event. where he finished ninth. He previously wrestled for Moldova and Romania and moved to Scotland in 2014. He has competed at numerous World and European Championships with his best results a fifth place finish at the 2019 World Championships in Kazakhstan and fifth at both the 2019 and 2021 European Championships.
